Last night, I completed reading two chapters of the book 'Atomic Habits' by James Clear. Those two chapters talk about, how people should not think directly about achieving the target but they should think about what they want to become. If they find out what they want to be, their target will be more clear than before. And always remember, think who before how, it will give you clear vision to think that how can you achieve it in actual.
There come four things that make you, what you want to be: Cue , Craving, Response and Reward.
The Cue:
This is a trigger that make you want that thing. This is the trigger point that develops an image or say thought of becoming something or to do something. It basically generates a feeling of achieving that thing, which you want after looking at it.For example: while walking down the street you smell the freshly baked donuts. That smell become the cue for you and then you buy them and satisfy yourself after eating them.
The Craving:
This is not that type of craving but it can be related. After you find your cue a type of craving emerge inside you brain. The craving of achieving that particular thing that you dream of.This craving work as a motivation to achieve the main target. From the above example, the smell of donut work as a cue for your brain and then a craving was developed inside your brain to eat those donuts. This craving will work as motivation for you to go that bakery and buy some donuts.
The Response:
The response is the most important thing in this process. If you do not respond to get your target, you will not be able to achieve it.Example, After the craving is developed inside the brain, you do or give some kind of responses to full-fill your craving. You go to that place and by some donuts and eat them. This response helps you to satisfy your craving for that thing which you want to achieve.
The Reward:
This is the target that you want to achieve. For which the craving was developed, for which you make response. This result satisfy your craving for that particular target.Example: Donut's smell worked as a cue, the craving develops inside your brain, then you make a response to buy them and then you got the reward, donuts. And after eating that you achieved your target.
In our everyday lives, when we do something repeatedly, it eventually turns into a habit.Like, every time you enter the room you turn on the light. This happens because as you enters the room and see that lights are off, which work as cue, the craving develops to open the lights, you make a response by clicking on the switch and by performing all these steps you get your reward, a lighted room :)
So, for developing a new habit or achieving a particular goal you have to know who you want to be and that will be your cue which will trigger the point inside you and then the craving to achieve that target will work as motivation to make a response that will help you to achieve your reward/target.Take your time to understand and incorporate it into your daily routine.Respond in a way that fulfills your desire to achieve your goals.
